LED Lighting in Lincoln

LED Lighting for AVs and Gesneriads

Scott Evans from the Omaha African Violet and Gesneriad Society presented on the science of light for AVs and gesneriads at MVAVC's spring meeting on June 11, 2018 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Scott has been experimenting with LED strip lighting as well as LED tube lights available as fluorescent tube replacements for some time.

Key take-aways:

  • LEDs tend to be brighter than fluorescent tube lighting

  • Less time with "lights on" is ordinarily needed for African violets which are plants with low-light requirements

  • Close monitoring of plants after beginning the use of LED lighting is needed to avoid the side effects of too much light.
