The Missouri Valley African Violet Council (MVAVC)is composed of a group of individuals from many Midwestern and Plains states who share a common interest in the plant botanically known as the Saintpaulia, more commonly known as the African violet. Current members hail from South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
MVAVC holds semi-annual meetings hosted by our affiliates. In recent years we have traveled to St. Louis, Des Moines, Tulsa, Kansas City, Wichita, Sioux Falls, Omaha, Lincoln, Joplin, Liberty, Missouri and Lawrence, Kansas. The spring meeting features a luncheon, meeting and program. The fall show is a 3-day event, which includes an annual AVSA judging school, a judged show, sale, banquet, meeting and program.
More than anything else, MVAVC members enjoy the fellowship of other African violet enthusiasts. Our interests range from appreciation of African violets as a relaxing and enjoyable hobby to more specialized interests such as designing with violets, exhibiting them, or the various commercial aspects of growing violets. No matter what your interests are, there will be similarly interested individuals in MVAVC.
Twice a year this wide ranging group of individuals come together to share these common interests. It makes for enjoyable weekends and lasting friendships.
MVAVC members benefit from attending the various programs geared to their African violet hobby. Speakers include expert hobbyists and commercial growers who share their secrets in hybridizing, growing and showing the African violet and Saintpaulia species.
Additionally, MVAVC publishes a quarterly newsletter featuring articles by members and from outside sources other than AVSA’s African Violet Magazine. These articles are wide-ranging in scope and are directed at the varying interests of our members. Other features include listings of Upcoming Events around the region complete with contact information, news about our members and dub affiliates as well as MVAVC business.
