On a special March 2, 1985 afternoon day in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a special group of people who lived in a 50 mile radius from Lincoln & Omaha in Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa and in between and down to Kansas city, MO. meet and formed the (MVAVC), with the purpose of growing, showing, and sharing information on our beloved plant name the African Violet.
Our First lady (president) was Joyce Stork, of Kent's Flower of Arlington, NE.. The first show was held in Kansas City, MO. at Roadway Inn. The theme of the show was "Violets In the Valley".
The following are some highlights from some of the years following the birth of Missouri Valley African Violet Council, as usual the council did have some fun. The council hopes that those of you that live within our boundaries that are not members might consider to do so. Membership information maybe found on the membership page.
In 1985, "Kent's Flower" won the "Best Commercial Display Tables", and also the "Best New Introduction Award" with "Snow Rose" and also the "3rd Best New Introduction Award" at the AVSA National Convention.
The first regular meeting of the MVAVC there were 44 people who attended on June 2, 1985. During this meeting, the boundaries were extended to add Lawrence, KS.
After the first banquet dinner, the business meeting was called to order: The first report was that there was no score in the sixth game of the World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals. "Royals won the World series game in extra innings", and also went on to win the World Series the following day.
Mid-American African Violet society has requested an AVSA National Convention to be held in Kansas City area in 1990 or 1991. (Convention was Approved for 1989) A recommendation from the board was presented and approved the MVAVC to support the AVSA Convention in Kansas City in 89.
Gene Loveland Won the Silver Cup with "Snowrose" for the best in Horticulture at the AVSA convention in St. Paul.
Sue Hill received an honorary AVSA one year membership for her service to AVSA in the MVAVC group. Sue was also the first MVAVC show chairperson.
The Best African Violet in a show in Nov.7-8,1987 at MAAVS had an unusual name "Top Banana". It was exhibited by Sue Hill.
Kent's Flowers received Best New Introduction with "Ice Fantasy". Kent's was also awarded Best AVSA commercial display table. He received a 10" Silver bowl and AVSA Blue Rosette for Best Horticulture Perfection in a display table.
I like the article on Ramond Russell in 1987. One's of his sayings "Raising African Violets is like eating potato chips. You can't take just one, you see something new and you've just got to have it".
Linda Golubski was at one time seed coordinator for the MVAVC seed fund.
